Who is María Corina Machado, the opponent back in Venezuela?
Nobel Peace Prize 2025 and a figure of the Venezuelan opposition, María Corina Machado returned to her country on 25 October 2026. His journey combines defence of free elections, liberal economic convictions and rapprochement with Donald Trump. But his return does not regulate his ineligibility or the presidential calendar. María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela on Sunday, October 25, 2026, after leaving the country in December 2025. RFI, the Guardian and El País report his announcement, confirmed by his ally Edmundo González Urrutia. Images show her surrounded by sympathizers at the shrine of the Divine Pastora in Barquisimeto. For the Nobel Peace Laureate 2025, this public reappearance opens a new stage, without guaranteeing her participation in a forthcoming presidential election. [S7] [S11] [S33]
From election observation to opposition leadership
Trained in engineering and finance, Machado first worked in business, and in 1992 created the Atenea Foundation for street children in Caracas. In 2002, she participated in the foundation of Súmate, an organization dedicated to free elections, training and election observation. Elected MP in 2010, she was removed from the National Assembly in 2014. She then led the Venezuela Sales Party and in 2017 helped create the Soy Venezuela alliance. [S39]
Its democratic commitment is accompanied by liberal economic convictions. The RTS recalls its opposition to the expropriations under Hugo Chávez and its proximity to rights such as Vox in Spain or Argentine President Javier Milei. These positions are subject to criticism: its role in challenging power does not mean that its agenda is consensus. [S15]
His victory at the opposition primary in 2023, with more than 90% of the votes according to the BBC, did not allow him to run for the next presidential election. The power precludes him from being eligible, on the basis of accusations of fraud and tax offences, which she contests as politically motivated. She then supported Edmundo González Urrutia for the 2024 election. [S8]
The electoral authority proclaims Nicolás Maduro winner without publishing detailed results. The opposition distributes copies of the minutes to support the victory it claims for González. In his presentation of Machado, the official website of the Nobel highlights this work of electoral documentation. The 2025 Peace Prize recognizes its work for democratic rights and a peaceful transition, not a mandate to govern. [S8] [S39]
A return after hiding and exile
Two periods must be distinguished: Machado lived underground in Venezuela after the contested presidential election, and then abroad after his departure in December 2025 to receive the Nobel Prize. Based in Panama, she reportedly tried to return at least seven times, according to Venezuela sales sources cited by RFI. This count comes from his party; the precise modalities of his return remain unknown. [S7]
The Guardian and El País describe his welcome in the church of Santa Rosa, in Barquisimeto, where sympathizers kiss and thread. His press service announced a car trip to Caracas. This announcement alone is not enough to establish his arrival in the capital. González, still exiled, says he wants to join her soon, without specifying a date. [S11] [S27] [S33]
Washington, support to different priorities
During his absence, the political framework changed. After the capture of Maduro by American forces in January 2026, his former vice-president Delcy Rodríguez took the interim presidency with Washington's support. Donald Trump praised the oil and trade agreements concluded with his government, but considered it still premature, in September, the organization of democratic elections, according to Reuters quoted by West France. [S8] [S25]
Machado, however, has increased Trump's support marks, going so far as to give him his Nobel medal. This proximity did not lead to US support for its accession to power. On Sunday, Trump declared that he was not informed of her return and hoped that she would be safe. These statements do not constitute a precise guarantee of protection. [S8] [S14]
The American role in his return gives rise to different readings. The Guardian reports that Washington had previously slowed his return; The BBC mentions an American denial. Marco Rubio now presents his arrival as the outcome of the reconciliation negotiations supported by the United States. Dinorah Figuera, the representative of the opposition participating in the dialogue, also attributed the talks. These statements do not allow for the reconstitution of authorizations or arrangements that made the trip possible. [S7] [S8] [S11]
Returning doesn't mean being able to present itself
Vente Venezuela demands a presidential election in 2027 and the lifting of Machado's ineligibility. Rodríguez promises elections without timetable. Part of the opposition negotiates with the interim government; Machado, not invited, says he does not want to hinder this dialogue. Rubio defends this path as a peaceful way to achieve free elections and sustainable democracy. [S7] [S25]
The concrete issue therefore goes beyond the presence of a leader: being able to support a candidate, meeting and voting without intimidation. Machado's return is an opening, but neither the date of the election nor his freedom of candidacy are acquired. It is on these guarantees, rather than on its only popular reception, that the actual enlargement of voters' choice can be measured. [S7] [S25]
