María Corina Machado: from ineligibility to exile, to return to Venezuela
María Corina Machado returned to Venezuela on 25 October 2026, after more than ten months abroad and several unsuccessful attempts. Its route links electoral exclusion, clandestineity and international negotiations. But his return does not regulate his right to stand in the presidential election or the election schedule. María Corina Machado announced her return to Venezuela on Sunday, October 25, 2026. RFI, the BBC and the Guardian report the same reappearance of the opposition leader, confirmed by his ally Edmundo González Urrutia. Images show her surrounded by sympathizers in Barquisimeto, Lara State. After more than ten months abroad, she returned to a public presence in her country, without any guarantee of her participation in a forthcoming presidential election. [S3] [S5] [S12]
2023-2024: a victory at the primaries, a candidacy prevented
In 2023 Machado won the opposition primary with more than 90% of the vote, according to the BBC. But his ineligibility prevented him from participating in the next presidential election. The power invokes charges of fraud and tax offences; It rejects them, considering them politically motivated. This exclusion deprives voters of the possibility of directly supporting their candidate in the national election. [S12]
Edmundo González Urrutia came in his place in 2024. The electoral authority proclaims Nicolás Maduro winner without publishing detailed results, reports the BBC. The opposition distributes copies of the minutes to support the victory it claims for González. The electoral challenge is accompanied by a wave of arrests: RFI reports 28 deaths and more than 2,400 arrests, including dozens of Machado collaborators. [S3] [S12]
December 2025: leaving hiding, then living in exile
Machado lived hidden in Venezuela before leaving the country in December 2025 to join Norway on the occasion of the Nobel Peace Prize. The BBC describes a night trip by fast boat. It is therefore necessary to distinguish between two periods: hiding within the country, and then exile abroad, particularly in Panama. Confounding them would erase the difference between protecting oneself from arrests on the spot and being unable to return. [S3] [S12]
During his absence, power changed hands. American forces captured Maduro in January 2026; his former vice-president, Delcy Rodríguez, then acted with Washington's support. The BBC underlines the subsequent conclusion of an oil agreement favourable to the United States. Maduro's departure did not lead to the accession to power of Camp Machado. [S5] [S12]
In 2026, repeated attempts to return
At least seven attempts to return fail, according to Machado's entourage quoted by RFI and BBC. ABC describes air, land and sea travel projects prepared from June onwards, hampered by political decisions, denied authorizations and logistical difficulties. This count remains attributed to his relatives; It does not alone establish the responsibility for each blockage. [S3] [S7] [S12]
The American role remains contested. The Guardian reports that the Trump administration would have wanted to delay his return to preserve his relations with Rodríguez. The BBC also mentions this information, but states that Washington denied having delayed his return. It would therefore be excessive to attribute all aborted attempts to a single and documented American decision. [S5] [S12]
On 22 October, thousands of people protested to demand elections and the return of the opponent. This gathering precedes his arrival: it does not constitute proof of his presence that day. RFI also reports that Vente Venezuela denounces the arrest of seven participants, a charge attributed to the party. [S40]
October 25: a public reappearance, a partially clarified itinerary
Machado appears at the sanctuary of the Divine Pastora, in the Santa Rosa district of Barquisimeto, then takes the road to Caracas, according to the Guardian and BBC. These accounts establish his movement to the capital, not his arrival at his destination. González, himself exiled, announces that he wants to join her, without specifying a date. [S5] [S12]
Reuters adds: four people who know her travels claim that she joined Colombia by private plane from Panama and then crossed the land border on Sunday. Another informed source refers to coordination with the Governments of the United States, Panama and Colombia. These elements are based on anonymous sources; his team did not publicly detail the itinerary. [S41]
Returning does not mean regaining all its political rights
Marco Rubio presents the return as the result of reconciliation discussions supported by Washington. Dinorah Figuera, who led the opposition delegation participating in the talks, also attributed the negotiations. Machado was not invited, but claims not to want to hinder them. The promoters of dialogue defend a peaceful transition; However, its exclusion raises the question of its ability to directly affect its modalities. [S3]
Rodríguez promises elections without announced calendar, while Vente Venezuela demands a vote in 2027 and the lifting of Machado's ineligibility. For citizens, the challenge is concrete: being able to welcome a leader does not yet guarantee that she can vote for her. His return marks the end of this exile, not the resolution of the restrictions that prevented his candidacy. [S3] [S27]
