Bavaria: The "Nid d'Aigle" ravaged by a fire, a suspect placed in a psychiatric hospital
The Kehlsteinhaus, a former representative building of the Nazi regime over Berchtesgaden, was largely destroyed by a fire declared on 23 October. A 33-year-old German, suspected of arson, was placed in a psychiatric hospital on a temporary basis. The motive remains to be established and reconstruction is envisaged. [S16] [S18]

The Kehlsteinhaus, known as the "Nid d'Aigle", was largely destroyed by a fire in the Bavarian Alps on Friday evening, 23 October. RFI, Euronews and Tagesschau report the same sin and the arrest of a suspect. On Saturday, a judge ordered the temporary placement of this 33-year-old German in a psychiatric hospital, according to a police statement reproduced by BGLand24. The investigation concerns a voluntary fire; the motive remains to be established. [S3] [S4] [S16] [S18]
Difficult intervention at over 1,800 meters
Located at 1,834 metres above Berchtesgaden, the building was fully lit when the rescue arrived. The access road, site configuration, then rain and snow complicated the intervention. According to the Bavarian police, the building and its immediate surroundings could only be approached with heavy respiratory protection. On Saturday afternoon, residual extinction operations continued. [S16] [S17] [S18]
Several French-language media evoke nearly 200 firefighters. The official communiqué states that a total of about 200 workers are involved: firefighters from six municipalities, the Bavarian Red Cross, mountain rescue and police officers. No occupants were found inside. The authorities did not report a fire victim; BGLand24 reported, however, at midday, quoting the Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann, that the suspect was injured and hospitalized, without specifying the circumstances of his injuries. There is still a divergence on the alert schedule. The police placed their reception at the Traunstein Coordination Centre at around 9:15 p.m., which was taken up by Euronews, while RFI mentioned 9:50 p.m. Tageschau indicates the arrival of first aid at 2152, a separate stage. The official communiqué is the direct reference for receiving the alert. [S3] [S4] [S16] [S17]
Judicial placement, not proven guilt
The investigation is conducted by the Traunstein Judicial Police under the direction of the local prosecutor's office. According to the update published at 4.45 p.m. by BGLand24, which reproduces a police statement, the suspect was arrested on Friday at around 9.45 p.m. near the scene of the disaster. The suspicions of arson increased during Saturday. The Minister of the Interior reported that the man had crossed the motorcycle rescue on the narrow Kehlstein road. [S16] [S17] [S18]
An initial psychiatric examination led the prosecution to request temporary placement in psychiatric hospitals. The judge accepted this request and the man was transferred there, according to the same update. This decision complements the earlier information from Tagesschau, which announced its presentation to a judge in Rosenheim without yet giving the outcome. It does not constitute a conviction. [S16] [S18]
At the press conference, Prosecutor Rainer Vietze had held that at least reduced criminal liability should be considered. A possible political motive is also being considered, but investigations on this point are only at the beginning. The history of the building, therefore, alone does not allow an intention to be attributed to the suspect. Investigators still need to determine the specific circumstances of the fire departure and the responsibilities. [S16] [S18]
Prohibited access and planned reconstruction
The area remains closed and a flight ban zone for drones has been established. The authorities ask hikers and climbers to avoid the surrounding area. On Saturday afternoon, investigators could still not safely enter the building; Their investigations must continue with an expert from the Bavarian criminal police. No closure period is specified. [S18]
Built in 1937-1938 as a place of representation for the Nazi regime, the Kehlsteinhaus was little frequented by Hitler. It must not be confused with the Berghof, its nearby private residence. Spared during the Second World War, it has been hosting a restaurant since 1952; an exhibition of the history of the building. [S3] [S16]
Joachim Herrmann spoke for a reconstruction. The building is owned by the Land of Bavaria, while the Berchtesgadener Landessiftung has a right to be employed. According to BGLand24, tourist manager Bartl Wimmer already mentions damages of several million euros, without definitive expertise. The Minister states that the building is well-insured and that compensation opportunities are being examined. The final cost allocation and reopening schedule remain unknown; historians must be involved in thinking about the future of the place. [S16] [S18]
