Bavaria: The "Nid d'Aigle" ravaged by a fire, a suspect arrested and hospitalized
A fire largely destroyed the Kehlsteinhaus over Berchtesgaden on the night of 23-24 October 2026. Approximately 200 stakeholders were mobilized on this difficult site. The runway of a voluntary fire is examined. The arrested suspect is hospitalized, according to the Bavarian Minister of Interior, who is planning a reconstruction.

The Kehlsteinhaus, known as "Nid d'Aigle", was ravaged by a fire on Friday evening, 23 October 2026, over Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. RFI, Euronews and Tagesschau report the same loss and questioning of a person whose role remains to be established. On Saturday, the follow-up to the BGLand24 regional media reported a largely destroyed building and a suspect hospitalized, citing respectively the dpa agency and Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann. Difficult intervention at over 1,800 meters
Firefighters saw the flames as they climbed to the building, at 1,834 metres above sea level. Upon their arrival, the building was completely lit. The configuration of the premises made it difficult to transport the vehicles; the building and its immediate surroundings could only be approached with heavy respiratory protection, says the Bavarian police. The extinction operations continued on Saturday morning. [S14] [S15] [S16]
Several French-language media evoke nearly 200 firefighters. The official communiqué gives a wider scope: a total of about 200 workers, including firefighters from six municipalities, the Bavarian Red Cross, mountain relief and the police. No occupiers were found inside during the first searches. [S1] [S3] [S15]
The human balance has evolved over the years. The first police release reported no injuries. At 1224 hours, however, BGLand24 reported that Joachim Herrmann had announced the hospitalization of the suspect, who was injured and from the area. The circumstances of his injuries are not specified in this update. The initial balance sheet cannot therefore be presented as final. [S15] [S16]
The voluntary track examined, a responsibility to establish
The Traunstein Judicial Police conducts investigations under the direction of the Public Prosecutor ' s Office in the same city. His first statement indicates that one person caught the attention of the investigators shortly after the fire started and was temporarily arrested. The link between this person and the fire is precisely the subject of the investigation. Tagesschau, then BGLand24 in relaying the police, mention a suspicion of a voluntary fire. [S14] [S15] [S16]
The hypothesis concerning a rider was also clarified. The first French-language articles attributed the Bild tabloid. BGLand24 then relayed dpa information from sources close to the investigation at 1204 hours, indicating that a rider arrested in the vicinity was a possible fire-maker. These elements remain information attributed, not a judicial finding. No motive is established in the documents consulted; This is not enough to prove guilt. [S1] [S3] [S16]
Limited access and chronology still imperfect
On Saturday morning, the police blocked the road leading to the site, while snow fell to the top, according to the observations of the AFP taken by RFI and West France. At 1115 hours, BGLand24 also relayed the establishment of a flight ban zone for drones and a demand for hikers and climbers to avoid the area. These measures concern the intervention area, while extinction remains difficult; their duration is not specified. [S1] [S3] [S16]
There is still a divergence over the time of the alert. The Bavarian police placed their reception at the Traunstein Coordination Centre at around 9:15 p.m., which was taken up by Euronews. RFI and Ouest-France indicate that the alarm was triggered around 9:50 p.m. Tageschau located the arrival of first aid at 9:52 p.m., a separate step that does not resolve this gap. For the receipt of the alert, the official communiqué is the direct reference available. [S1] [S2] [S3] [S14] [S15]
A planned reconstruction without announced funding
Built in 1937-1938, the Kehlsteinhaus was to serve as a venue for the Nazi regime. In spite of his association with Hitler, he had little return. It must not be confused with the Berghof, its nearby private residence. Spared by the destruction of the Second World War, the building has hosted a restaurant since 1952 and an exhibition dedicated to its history. [S1] [S5] [S14]
Joachim Herrmann is planning his reconstruction, according to his statements reported by BGLand24. The building is owned by the Land of Bavaria, while the Berchtesgadener Landessiftung has a right to be employed. This perspective is not yet a costed work programme: the information consulted does not specify the cost, the funding or the distribution of expenses. [S16]
The site was to remain open this season until 8 November, according to the local tourism organization quoted by Tagesschau. For the operator and visitors, no reopening schedule is announced in the sources consulted. The assessment of the damage and the investigation therefore remain decisive in determining the concrete follow-up to the disaster. [S14] [S16]
