Leo XIV recovering after lung surgery: a confirmed cancer, the balance continues
Operated on 13 October at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Leo XIV suffered the removal of the lower lobe of the right lung after confirming an adenocarcinoma. The procedure was carried out without complications, according to the medical bulletin. A week of hospitalization is still planned, but further examinations still need to specify the continuation of care. [S2] [S10]
Leon XIV begins his recovery Wednesday 14 October 2026 at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, after an operation that confirmed the cancer of a pulmonary nodule. The lower lobe of the right lung was removed. According to the medical bulletin published by the Vatican, the intervention took place without complication and the pope returned to his room after he woke up. Reviews are still needed to complete the assessment. [S2] [S6] [S10]
A successful intervention, a specified diagnosis
The communiqué signed by Luigi Carbone, the pope's referent physician, and Stefano Margaritora, head of the chest surgery team, reported a pulmonary adenocarcinoma, already suspected before surgery. Vatican News states that the diagnosis was confirmed by examination of the tissue during the procedure and that the removal was carried out by a video-assisted technique. It is therefore not just the removal of a nodule, but the removal of the lower right lobe. [S2] [S10]
The surgical procedure lasted about 90 minutes, while the surgical procedure was about three hours. These durations describe two different perimeters and do not contradict each other. After a normal awakening and a brief period of observation, the pontiff returned to his room on the tenth floor of the Gemelli. [S2] [S10]
RTBF, South West and Blick agree on the essential facts: confirmed cancer, removal of the lower right lobe and smooth operation. However, this convergence is mainly based on information from the Holy See; South West and Blick include AFP. It does not constitute a series of independent medical assessments. The Vatican News article, updated on 13 October at 22:45, now contains the detailed bulletin and diagnosis. [S1] [S2] [S7] [S10]
Examinations still need to determine the continuation of care
On Sunday, after the Angelus, Leo XIV announced the discovery of a nodule "at a very early stage" and "well located". These indications preceded the intervention. Vatican News announces post-operative examinations and tissue analysis taken in the coming days. A source in the Vatican, cited by South West and Blick, also indicates that investigations are under way into the possible spread of cancer. [S1] [S2] [S7] [S10]
The term "radical" intervention, used in the press release, refers to the objective of completely removing the identified tumour. It alone does not permit the affirmation of a cure or the exclusion of the need for additional treatments. The published information establishes the nature of the cancer and the immediate course of the operation, but not yet all of its therapeutic outcomes. [S2] [S10]
Interviewed by AFP, Juanita Mora, spokesman for the American Lung Association, explains that complementary analyses, including biomarker tests, will help determine whether further treatments are needed. According to her, surgery could be enough if the tumor is well located and the lobe removed. This assessment remains conditional: it is not a decision of the team that treats the pope. [S6] [S7]
A week at the hospital, without a certain date of resumption
According to Vatican News, the planned duration of hospitalization remains about a week. It must not be confused with that of full recovery. The Telegram and Blick indicate that all meetings of the pope were cancelled until October 20, without announcing a certain date for a return to all of his activities. [S6] [S7] [S10]
The uncertainty also concerns the November trip to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. Available publications raise the question of its retention, but do not report a decision to set aside. For the faithful and the organizers, the immediate interruption of the agenda is therefore established; the timetable beyond still depends on the information to come on recovery and care. [S6] [S7]
A publicly explained choice of care
Leon XIV presented the operation as a personal decision made on medical recommendation: the doctors advised to intervene and he accepted this proposal. His announcement thus distinguishes the role of caregivers from that of the patient. The Holy See communication makes the diagnosis and the main operating elements public, without providing a complete medical record. At this stage, it makes it possible to understand the choice of surgical treatment, but not to prejudge the following decisions. [S1] [S10]
