Attack in Hebron: two soldiers killed according to army, Netanyahu prepares closure of West Bank
Two Israeli soldiers were killed and three others wounded, according to a military record reported after the 23 October shooting in Hebron. The two attackers were shot. Benyamin Netanyahu ordered the closure of the city and preparations for a closure of the entire occupied West Bank, before the 27 October legislative elections. The scope of the restrictions and their guarantees for the inhabitants remain unclear.

Benyamin Netanyahu ordered, Friday, 23 October 2026, the immediate closure of Hebron and asked the army to prepare for a complete closure of the occupied West Bank following an attack on military personnel. The updated report includes two Israeli soldiers killed and three wounded, according to the army cited by the Jerusalem Post and Associated Press. The two Palestinian attackers were shot dead. Two soldiers killed, not five Israelis
The shooting took place in the morning at a checkpoint near the Judea crossroads, north of Hebron. The first reports of RTS, France 24 and La Libre reported five injured, two of them in critical condition, according to Magen David Adom, the Israeli relief service. They describe the same attack: two men firing at soldiers before being killed. [S2] [S3] [S7]
In a publication dated 1533 hours, the Jerusalem Post then reported the military announcement of the death of Ron Yonatan Roytman, 23, and Yuval Shai Svilem, 20, members of the Ari battalion of the search and rescue brigade. Associated Press also reports two soldiers killed and three others slightly injured. The title of South West referring to five Israelis killed is therefore not substantiated: its own text refers to five wounded. [S1] [S18] [S19]
According to the army, the attackers had an M16 rifle and a gun. The Israeli authorities claim to have prevented a larger attack on civilians; the Chief of Staff refers to ammunition discovered in their vehicle. This presentation of the attackers' project remains attributed to the army, distinctly from the shootings against soldiers reported by several media. [S7] [S11] [S19]
A local closure, an extension announced
The Prime Minister's statements distinguish two measures: immediately impose a cordon around Hebron and prepare for the closure of the entire West Bank. The army claims to have closed Hebron and launched operations in the homes of the assailants, other suspects and other areas. These announcements alone do not establish that the general closure of the territory is fully implemented. [S3] [S11]
Associated Press then reports that the army announces dozens of operations and arrests, as well as seizures of weapons. The Agency describes closures of gates and checkpoints linking Palestinian villages to the main axes. Roads remained accessible to Israeli motorists, especially settlers, although they could be delayed: therefore, travel constraints did not affect all residents in the same way. [S19]
In Hebron, the Palestinian Ministry of Religious Affairs claims that Israeli forces closed the Ibrahimi Mosque and expelled its staff, reports Middle East Eye. The Ministry denounces an infringement of freedom of worship. The media also reports, citing Palestinian information, arrests and at least one gunshot wound in Dura. These local elements are not corroborated in the other reports cited here. [S9]
Responsibilities to be distinguished
The far right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich are calling for the dismantling of the Palestinian Authority. Smotrich calls for a military campaign "as in Gaza" and announces the demolition of Palestinian buildings close to the site of the attack, which he calls illegal. The sources report these requests and orders, without establishing the execution of all announced demolitions. [S1] [S7] [S10]
ABC points out that there is no link between the Palestinian Authority and the attack. In the first reports of RTS and ABC, Hamas salutes the shooting without claiming it. The approval of an attack, its operational readiness and the responsibility of a separate institution should therefore not be confused. [S3] [S11]
In terms of analysis, protecting people from further attacks is the security justification advanced by the Israeli authorities. Appreciating the proportionality of the restrictions, however, requires knowing their duration, authorized travel and guarantees for persons unrelated to the attackers. The publications cited do not detail the exceptions to access to care and work or the remedies available against closure. [S3] [S11] [S19]
Security at the heart of the end of the campaign
The attack took place before the general elections on 27 October. Netanyahu asked for the cancellation of the Likud events scheduled for Friday. His rival Gadi Eisenkot also praised the intervention of the soldiers. This context gives an electoral scope to reactions, but it is not enough to demonstrate the motivations of the closure or its effectiveness to prevent further attacks. [S3] [S17]
