White House: the title of lawyer of Katie Zacharia challenged, his diploma confirmed
An association asks the California Bar to investigate the qualifications claimed by Donald Trump's new spokesman. His law degree was confirmed by Pepperdine, but his admission to an American bar remained unestablished in the sources consulted. This controversy accompanies a very brief first press conference. The path of Katie Zacharia, the new spokesman for the White House, is the subject of a specific challenge: not the existence of her law degree, but her right to stand as a lawyer. On October 14, 2026, Campaign for Accountability announced that it had filed a complaint with the California Bar Association requesting an investigation. This is done in the immediate aftermath of its first press briefing and does not constitute a conviction or confirmation that an investigation has been opened. [S7] [S9]
A certified diploma, a professional qualification to be established
The Pepperdine University confirms, in a publication of 9 October announcing his appointment, that Katie Zacharia obtained her legal degree, a Juris Doctor, in 2011. To present the case as a general suspicion of false diploma would therefore be misleading: this document attests its university training, without providing proof of admission to a bar. [S10]
The controversy concerns the use of the title of lawyer. According to the Popular Information analysis taken by the AFP, Fox News has presented at least 18 times since March 2025. The Express also reports that the Washington Post found no registration, active or expired, under the name of Zacharia or her birth name, Black. This negative research feeds questions but is not a decision of a professional or judicial authority. [S2] [S4] [S6]
The 24-hour articles of the Geneva Tribune and the Devoir reflect the same challenge. However, they publish the AFP story: their convergence does not correspond to three independent surveys. Pepperdine's statement and Campaign for Accountability's statement provide elements of a different nature, respectively, on the diploma and on the announced complaint. [S2] [S3] [S6] [S9] [S10]
The Chinese experience invoked in response
When questioned on 13 October, in the presence of Donald Trump, about the American state in which she would have passed the bar, Katie Zacharia replied: "When I moved to China. According to her LinkedIn track reported by the media, she worked in Beijing between 2011 and 2013. The Express states that she belonged to the international team of Zhong Lun, as legal adviser. This experience alone does not provide information on the possibility of admission to an American bar. [S2] [S4] [S7]
In a reply to the AFP published by Ouest-France, Katie Zacharia claims to have practiced international contract law with the appropriate qualifications. However, this defence does not specify an American bar. The White House's director of communication, Steven Cheung, attacked the association's credibility, which he presented as a far left organization. This is a political reaction, not professional justification. [S7]
This response complements the first AFP publications, which indicated that the White House had not commented immediately. It would therefore be incorrect to say that the executive remained entirely silent. The point still unclarified in the available evidence remains the qualification allowing Katie Zacharia to claim the contested title. [S2] [S6] [S7]
What the complaint really requires
Campaign for Accountability does not rely solely on television presentations made by third parties. The association cites in particular a statement of 5 October in which Katie Zacharia claims to be a lawyer herself. It also asks whether its declared functions as "general counsel" with Fix California constituted an unauthorized exercise of the right. She requested a transmission to the competent prosecutors if violations were established. These are the complainant's requests, not the conclusions of the bar. [S9]
The issue of responsibility is thus to distinguish between banners and television channels, personal statements and actual activities. The protection of the public against misleading qualifications must go hand in hand with the examination of the facts and the defence of the person concerned. The documents consulted do not contain any substantive decisions or convictions. [S9]
A first press briefing that adds to the controversy
On 13 October, Katie Zacharia devoted most of her first press conference to the successes she attributes to Donald Trump, and then answered only three questions, all from media known as conservative according to the AFP. L-Express and BFMTV describe an intervention of less than fifteen minutes. Donald Trump nevertheless praised his performance; The Express also reports a BBC correspondent's call not to judge a person taking office too quickly. [S2] [S4] [S5]
In terms of access to information, such a short exchange leaves little room for revival and contradiction. However, it is not sufficient to establish a lasting restriction on press freedom or to decide the question of qualifications. The ease at the desk and the accuracy of a career path remain two distinct subjects: the criticism of the former does not prove anything on the latter. [S2] [S4] [S9]
