West Bank: European diplomats attacked in Taybeh, French mayor beaten
Bernard Baudoux, Mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries, was attacked on 17 October 2026 during a visit with European diplomats to Taybeh during the olive harvest. Masked Israeli settlers attacked a European delegation on Saturday 17 October 2026 in Taybeh, the occupied West Bank. Bernard Baudoux, communist mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries, in the North, was hit and a Belgian diplomatic vehicle damaged. Belgium condemned the aggression, which also targeted Palestinians and Catholic representatives. The 78-year-old French elected official was able to continue his visit without serious injuries, according to information from the AFP taken by the RTBF. [S1] [S8]
A cooperation visit at harvest time
The stories of RTBF, RFI and BBC relate to the same event: a delegation with French, Belgian and Polish representatives was in this predominantly Christian village near Ramallah. According to witnesses cited by AFP, settlers intervened to prevent Palestinian farmers from picking up their olives, before attacking visitors. Several publications contain the same agency testimonies; Their convergence does not therefore constitute as many independent surveys. [S1] [S8] [S12]
The trip also had a municipal goal. Bernard Baudoux came to formalize a cooperation agreement between Aulnoye-Aymeries and Taybeh. Associated Press states that the visitors then participated in the harvest with the inhabitants. These two dimensions — cooperation between municipalities and presence with farmers — belong to the same visit. [S1] [S19]
When questioned by the AFP, the mayor claims to have been thrown down and beaten with iron bars. In a message reported by Associated Press, he also describes kicks. The images viewed by the agencies show him sitting on the floor, leaning against a car, with his tricolor scarf. They document part of the scene, while the details of the beatings are based on his testimony and those of those present. [S1] [S19]
Brussels condemns, Paris calls for prosecution
The Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot, confirmed that his Consul General was among the persons concerned. He said the Belgian team was safe and sound. A glass of a consular vehicle was broken, according to the Belgian authorities quoted by the BBC. The Minister called on Israel to protect Palestinians, diplomats and journalists and bring those responsible to justice. [S8] [S12]
Brussels also intends to continue to defend European sanctions against the perpetrators and their supporters. This is a political position announced, not new sanctions already adopted in response to the attack. On the French side, Jean-Noël Barrot asks the Israeli authorities to arrest and prosecute those responsible. [S1] [S12] [S19]
Contrast Israeli Reactions
The head of Israeli diplomacy, Gideon Saar, condemned the violence, which he attributed to "Israeli rioters". However, he blames the consulates for not coordinating their travel with the army, considering that such an approach could have contributed to their security. According to the military statement reported by the BBC, no soldiers were present at the time of the incident, based on a preliminary examination. This issue of prevention remains separate from the responsibility of the perpetrators of beatings and degradation. [S1] [S12]
Benjamin Netanyahu's office, for its part, referred to a campaign of "defamation" against Israel and the Jewish inhabitants of the settlements, while calling not to conclude before the facts were established. On the other hand, Bernard Baudoux believes that his aggression reveals a governmental "tolerance" towards such violence. These political assessments alone do not establish individual responsibilities in the attack. [S1] [S12]
An investigation announced, residents still exposed
The Israeli police announced that they had opened an investigation to gather testimonies and identify suspects. There are no reports of arrests in connection with this attack. The report is also incomplete: the Guardian mentions three wounded, while other reports detail the state of the French mayor. The identity of the assailants and the judicial follow-up remain to be established. [S1] [S10] [S12]
For the inhabitants, the stakes go beyond the security of a diplomatic visit: the testimonies describe a direct obstacle to the possibility of harvesting on their land. Bernard Baudoux stresses that he will be able to return to France, while the residents will remain exposed. Sources do not allow for the estimation of agricultural losses caused by this attack. [S1] [S8]
The aggression of the American photojournalist Heidi Levine, which occurred the previous day in another locality while covering the harvest, falls within the same context of violence, but is a separate affair. There is no evidence cited to attribute the two attacks to the same people. [S12] [S19]
