Mobilisation du 17 octobre: the Parisian procession begins, 133 arrests announced at 2 p.m
The Parisian demonstration moved from République to Place de Clichy after clashes. The prefecture announces 133 arrests at 2 p.m. in the capital, a provisional assessment which does not concern only Republic. There are challenges to travel restrictions and police intervention, while judicial follow-up remains unknown. [S16] [S31] [S13]

The Paris demonstration on Saturday 17 October 2026 started at around 14:15, from the Place de la République towards Place de Clichy, according to the directs of TF1info and franceinfo. This departure comes after tensions in the square. At 2 p.m., the police prefecture reported 133 arrests in Paris, reports TF1info. This figure is a situational point, not a final assessment of the day. [S16] [S31]
A Parisian record, not that of the only clashes in the Republic
According to the prefecture, cited by TF1info, the arrests were mainly related to alleged acts of grouping with a view to committing violence or degradation and violence against a public authority. It also announces 1,046 preventive checks and 49 fines since the morning. The available evidence does not specify the individual judicial follow-up: this count therefore does not allow for the presentation of persons arrested as convicted. [S16]
At 11 a.m., the prefectural assessment relayed by Le Monde and La Libre was 61 arrests, 589 preventive checks and four lump sum fines. These figures correspond to an earlier reading and should not be added to the 14-hour reading. Their recovery by several media is based on the same official source, rather than on independent counts. [S8] [S32] [S16]
In the Republic, reported violence and circumstances to be specified
The prefecture claims that several hundred people have been attacking the police for 13 hours, including by projectile jets. TF1info reports the use of tear gas and advances by police and gendarmes to keep them away. Franceinfo also relays the findings of AFP journalists on the use of a water gun near the square and on a car burned by protesters. [S16] [S31]
These accounts do not allow each confrontation to be reconstructed and violent acts attributed to all demonstrators. They do not provide a complete record of the injured, a systematic description of the consequences or possibilities of leaving the site. Police justification of interventions is reported; their necessity and proportionality cannot be assessed globally on the basis of these factors alone. [S16] [S31]
The morning had already experienced separate episodes. The prefecture reports two undeclared processions, one in the area of Gare du Nord and Faubourg-Saint-Denis, the other rue de Rennes. AFP journalists observed tear gas in the first sector, followed by a charge and blocking of part of the second group on Old Columbia Street. These scenes don't take place in Republic. [S8] [S32]
CNews targeted: a separate episode, disputed damage
Around 7 a.m., about 100 people blocked access to the parking lot of the building housing CNews and Europe 1, according to the prefecture cited by franceinfo and West France. Both media reports projectiles and 21 arrests. On the other hand, their versions consulted differ on the damage: West France mentions broken windows, while the franceinfo page explicitly indicates the absence of damage and broken windows. This point remains uncertain. There is no automatic way to add these 21 arrests to the Paris balance sheet of 2 hours. [S9] [S10] [S16]
CNews defended the possibility of informing without intimidation or violence, whatever the editorial staff. This reaction concerns the safety of journalists; the sources do not allow to identify the persons involved in front of his seat to those present in the confrontations of the Republic. [S10] [S16]
Show, but on an imposed course
The Republic–Clichy route is the result of discussions with the prefecture. Student and high school organizations wanted to join the places of power in central Paris. The authorities refused this destination and banned demonstrations in several sectors, including around the Elysée, Matignon and Champs-Elysées, citing the prevention of overflows. Coppélia Moreau of the Interfac Île-de-France contests this refusal, reports Le Nouvel Obs. There is a real disagreement about where participants can make their claims visible. [S12] [S13] [S9]
These claims are not limited to incidents: purchasing power, fuel, means of public services and conditions of study are included in the appeals. A high school student interviewed by the AFP in Montparnasse explained that she was demonstrating for public education while fearing police intervention. This testimony recalls the diversity of individual motivations. As for the national scale of the movement, the actions on participatory maps and police forecasts do not constitute a count of the participants actually present. [S22] [S30] [S32] [S25]
