European diplomats, Catholic representatives and Palestinians were targeted by masked Israeli settlers on Saturday, 17 October 2026 in Taybeh, near Ramallah, the occupied West Bank. Bernard Baudoux, mayor of Aulnoye-Aymeries, in the North, was injured and a Belgian consular vehicle was damaged. France calls for the arrest of those responsible, while the Israeli police announce an investigation. [S2] [S4] [S5]
A delegation attacked during harvest
The BBC, Deutsche Welle and the AFP dispatch published by NDTV describe the same attack: a delegation of French, Belgian and Polish representatives was in this predominantly Christian village when settlers intervened to prevent Palestinians from picking their olives, according to the witnesses interviewed. The Belgian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot, confirms that his Consul General was among the persons concerned. These accounts converge, but several details are based on the same testimonies gathered by the AFP, not on as many independent audits. [S2] [S4] [S7]
According to Deutsche Welle, masked men surrounded a diplomatic vehicle with off-road vehicles, demanded identification and broken a window. The Belgian authorities confirm the damage to their vehicle. A video viewed by the AFP shows Bernard Baudoux, wearing his tricolor scarf, collapsed on the ground against a car. These images document part of the scene, without establishing by themselves the complete succession of acts. [S2] [S4] [S7]
He was 78 years old and said that he was thrown to the ground, kicked and with iron bars. He reported minor injuries to AFP; Two people who exchanged with him indicated that hospitalisation was not necessary. No detailed medical examination is presented in these articles. [S4] [S7]
Bernard Baudoux explained that he came to sign a cooperation agreement, accompanied by the Consul General of France in Jerusalem and a priest. Asked also by Reuters, he states that he was participating in the harvest in solidarity with the local community when he was attacked. This testimony complements the story of his visit: municipal cooperation and presence with farmers are not two distinct events. [S4] [S9]
Paris and Brussels demand judicial follow-up
Jean-Noël Barrot, French Foreign Minister, asks the Israeli authorities to arrest the perpetrators of the aggression and bring them to justice. He also called for an end to such violence and the protection of civilians, invoking Israel's obligations under international law. [S5]
Maxime Prévot also calls for the protection of Palestinians, diplomats and journalists. He announced that Belgium would continue to defend European sanctions against the perpetrators and their supporters. This is a political demand: the sources consulted do not report new sanctions adopted in response to this attack. [S2] [S9]
The Israeli Foreign Minister, Gideon Saar, condemns the violence committed by Israeli rioters. However, he criticized the delegation for not coordinating his trip with the army, believing that that approach could have improved its security. The army also condemns the attack and states, on the basis of a preliminary examination, that no soldiers were present at the time of the incident. This explanation concerns prevention; it does not establish any responsibility for visitors in the beatings they have been subjected to. [S2] [S4]
Benjamin Netanyahu's office calls for caution over individual responsibilities and evokes a coordinated campaign of denigration of Israel and Jewish settlement inhabitants. The reported statements do not provide evidence of such a campaign. On the other hand, Bernard Baudoux believes that such violence is evidence of governmental tolerance. These political assessments must be distinguished from the specific acts which the investigation must attribute to the assailants. [S2] [S4]
Harvesting without violence
For the inhabitants, the immediate challenge is access to their land and the possibility of working there without being attacked. Bernard Baudoux points out that residents remain exposed after visitors leave. The information consulted does not provide an estimate of the agricultural losses caused by this attack or the duration of the interruption of the harvest. The aggression of photographer Heidi Levine, which occurred the previous day in another locality, is a separate event. [S2] [S4]
The Israeli police announced that they wanted to collect the testimonies and identify the suspects. Reuters does not report any immediate announcement of arrest in his article. The identity of the perpetrators, the responsibilities of each individual and the follow-up to the proceedings must therefore be established: the initiation of an investigation does not mean that the requests for prosecution have already been completed.
