Trappes: Kevin T.'s custody suspended for psychiatric observation
The suspect of the 23 October attack in Trappes and La Verrière was transferred to the psychiatric hospital in the police prefecture. The observation, which may last 48 hours, must determine whether its hearings can resume. This measure does not constitute a decision on criminal liability. [S14] [S16] [S31]

The detention of 39-year-old Kevin T., suspected of the murderous attack of 23 October 2026 in Trappes and La Verrière, was suspended after a psychiatric examination on Saturday night. The National Anti-Terrorist Prosecutor's Office (Pnat) announced on Sunday its transfer to the psychiatric clinic of the police prefecture in Paris. The observation, which may last 48 hours, must determine whether its condition permits the continuation of its hearings. [S14] [S16] [S27]
An interruption of hearings, not an exemption
The terms "removal" and "suspension" used in the articles refer to the same interruption. The prosecutor's statement reproduced by TF1 Info states that the measure is suspended during the observation. He announces a medical transfer, not a return to freedom. The justification given thus concerns the suspect's current ability to be heard by the investigators. [S16]
Police custody had previously been extended Saturday morning after a first hearing, and its condition was considered compatible with this measure, reports RTBF. The published information does not detail the medical reasons for the change in assessment after the evening exam. [S19]
This assessment does not mitigate criminal responsibility at the time of the shooting. Article 122-1 of the Criminal Code distinguishes the abolition of discernment or control of acts, which is based on criminal irresponsibility, from their alteration, which leaves the person liable with consequences for the penalty. Therefore, a psychiatric diagnosis alone is not sufficient to establish irresponsibility. No such decision is announced in the information reported on Kevin T. [S31] [S16]
Reported treatment, effects still unknown
According to a source close to the investigation cited by the AFP, confirming information from LCI, the suspect was diagnosed with schizophrenic and was medically treated. This information, reported in particular by Europe 1 and RTBF, must be distinguished from the official announcement of the prosecution on psychiatric observation. The nature of the treatment and the conditions for its follow-up are not specified. [S3] [S19]
The Pnat also confirms that toxicology tests revealed cannabis and cocaine in his blood. The publications consulted do not provide any concentrations or medical conclusions to assign these substances a specific role in the attack or psychiatric condition. Their presence alone does not make it possible to conclude on his discernment in the facts. [S14] [S16] [S31]
Victims and racist motive at the heart of the investigation
TF1 Info, RFI and RTBF report one death and five injuries after a car fire on Friday morning in Trappes and then in La Verrière. Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old MMA fighter, was killed; A 12-year-old child is among the injured. Boulevard Voltaire and BFMTV mention four wounded: this difference is not explained in their texts. The results of five injured were the results of the first three media. [S16] [S14] [S19] [S1] [S9]
On Sunday, the Mayor of La Verrière, Nicolas Dainville, said that the child was getting better, reports Ouest-France, without presenting a detailed medical report. A white march in tribute to Pengo Bossio Wangi was also organized in Aubervilliers. [S30] [S5]
The investigation concerns an assassination and attempted assassination in connection with a terrorist enterprise, with a racist aggravating circumstance. RTBF, taking information from the World, reports that the suspect claimed to want "avenge the traders" after the violence of 17 October, targeting black and Arab people. These reported statements shed light on the racist track, but do not establish affiliation with an organization. [S16] [S19]
Police custody of relatives continues. In particular, investigators seek to determine the existence of possible complicity or exchanges prior to the attack. These hearings do not in themselves demonstrate participation in the facts. [S14] [S29]
Family demands equal treatment
Yassine Bouzrou, a lawyer with the family of Pengo Bossio Wangi, said he was surprised by this interruption in police custody, which he considered rare. He denounces a tendency, according to him, to quickly favour psychiatric explanation for the attacks attributed to the far right. This assessment remains that of the lawyer: the articles available do not present comparative data establishing a difference in treatment according to the ideological profile. [S10] [S11]
The lawyer specifies that he does not challenge the psychiatric expertise or the principle of criminal irresponsibility, but calls for the same expertise and deadlines for assessment for all. At this stage, the justification given by the prosecutor remains limited to the possible resumption of hearings. The search for motive, the assessment of factual discernment and the establishment of responsibilities remain separate issues. [S10] [S16] [S31]
